Juniors Playing Seniors

One of the great disappointments about junior sport is the drop-out rate that hits in the middle teen years in particular, effectively stopping children moving on with their sport into senior competition. This means that healthy activities that can become life-long passions are lost.

FHC are really working diligently on this complex issue, and I’m thrilled to report that last weekend approximately 50 FHC juniors enjoyed a senior game in the men’s or ladies division! This is an outstanding achievement for the Club, and my thanks go to the men’s and women’s administration and their selectors, as well as to junior coaches and parents that are supporting this initiative. As the season progresses I’m sure that we will see rapid progress in the kids that are taking advantage of the opportunity to get an extra game in each week. If you’re playing U17/15 and would like to get involved, let Brendan know and we’ll get you involved quick smart!

Many years of hard work has gone into getting these kids to the standards that they are achieving, so if you’re a current or recent FHC junior coach puff your chest out because your efforts are going to see FHC senior teams achieve an enormous amount of success in coming years. Particular congrats to the coaches that have taught/are teaching Rhyce/Andrew Shand, Hadyn Shaw, Ryan Hopkins, Ruth Torr, Karen Huddle, Bronte Kerley, Lexie White and Sarah Breen who have all tasted State League hockey this year, whilst still juniors. Well done players as well!
