WOMEN

State League 2 (3) def Kew (1) Goals E Fithall, O Colasurdo, J Luckett

Started well but found ourselves 1 nil down after 15 minutes from a corner. The regrouped and found something positive and really started to work well together. The defense was under pressure but combined as a unit to stem the tide. Still one nil down at half time the girls never gave up and worked extremely hard to convert and with the constant pressure being applied by the girls, a PC was converted by Esther Fithall. The Kew girls looked tired as our girls continued to attack with and put them under pressure and with a great set up moving forward with a scrimmage in front of the goal Olivia Colasurdo gave us a 2-1 lead. Some great work in defence again this week we were able to turn defense into attack. The third goal came from a crossed ball from Rachel Doody from the half way line on the sideline with a direct pass across to Lexie White at right half who gave an early pass froward for Karin Huddle to work to just outside the circle for a slap pass across the goal and Jane Luckett quickly converted high into the top of the net for a 3-1 win. The girls are playing really confidently and communicating well with each other and supporting each other well. Now sitting Third on the ladder and playing Yarra next week who are 5th we are in for another tough match. Relegation is now not on the agenda but finals are a very strong possibility. The girls now know they are a strong unit and playing well and knows what might happen in the next couple of weeks.

Metro 1 North (2) def La Trobe (1) Goals G Minett, N Bloomfield

The 1st placed Footscray side played a tough and determined LaTrobe  (3rd).  The LaTrobe girls had the jump on the FHC side converting an early goal  off a short corner. After 15 minutes the FHC team settled and played their game – gaining control of the game for the rest of the half.1 – 0 down at half time the FHC girls were determined to continue the good efforts late the the 1st half with team goals to convert as many corners as possible, play their positions and keep possession. Constant attack resulted in a corner conversion from Gabby Minnet off a rebound from a straight shot. The girls could feel the game in their hands with multiple corner opportunities and circle penetrations.  The LaTrobe girls were playing defensive, flooding the circle, Footscray’s only hope was to keep converting corners. With 30 seconds to go a fantastic pass from Giulia Virtuoso from the back line, to Nicole Virtuoso at Center half who passed a quick ball into the circle where a corner was forced  – the final opportunity for conversion. The huddle formed and the instruction was to hit it in. With an intense atmosphere, the perfect push out, the perfect stick trap and ….the perfect shot from Harry Bloomfield – CRACK – the sound of the ball hitting the backboard was terrific. The girls all ran in to the sound of the final whistle going….what an amazing end to the game.

Metro 1 South (0) lt Knox (2)

M1S have been plagued with unavailability’s due to promotions, injury and other circumstances. However in this must win game, the girls did their best. This was an extremely physical encounter and we have now lost Kate with a broken bone in her right hand. The game was played at quite a pace and Know boosted with some of the sate league players, proved stronger on the day. A couple of lack of concentration periods resulted in two very soft goals being scored against FHC. However FHC fought back gallantly and played a wonderful second half but just failed to convert the good play into goals. Our defence was solid as ever and mentions must be made of Kate Kidd, Steff Butters and Nicole Ducret who were outstanding. Result FHC beaten by Knox 2-0.

Metro 2 North (2) lt Yarra Valley (3) Goals Holly Azzopardi 2

The game started off on a high note with Footscray scoring in the first 5 minutes of the game.  The girls were moving the ball around extremely well and this continued to pay off with a second goal only 3 minutes after the first.  This motivated the opposition and they slogged it out with Footscray until half time.  The second half of the game was a let down for the girls who couldn’t seem to get their defensive game into action and this resulted in a goal early on in the second half for Yarra Valley.  Two more goals resulting from short corners followed and Footscray were unable to lift and respond.  To their credit, with only 11 players until well into the second half and two players ill with a third player injured, they fought it out until the final whistle.

State League 2 (2) lt Southern (3) Goals S Shaw, T Griffin

After leading 2 – 0 at half time, Footscray were unable to hold out the game with 3 conversions by Southern in the second half.

Pennant C (3) def Camberwell (1) Goals R Virtuoso, B Denning, N Lewis

The newly christened Vinnie Bobalino got things started for the Bulldogs after the opening goal from Stuart Mclean was overturned by the umpire after being talked into by the Camberwell GK. Vinnie (aka Nic Lewis) converted a penalty corner with a strong drag flick into the Camberwell net and celebrated with his ‘strut’. Rico scored the second goal giving the side a 2-0 buffer at half time. Footscray had all the play but could not convert numerous opportunities, before Brendan Denning managed to get a touch on Tung Le’s penalty corner solo effort mid-way through the second half to put Footscray 3-0 up. Camberwell came back with a consolation goal late in the half, but Footscray still missed further chances to extend the lead.
